The road through the trees
Before there is a lodge, there is the way you arrive at it. The sealed access road is in — and it already tells you what kind of place this is.
Every stay has a first impression, and it usually happens before you have parked the car. For Redwood Summit it is the last two minutes of the drive: off the main road, up through the forest, the trees closing in and the noise dropping away.
That road is now sealed and open to the lodge platforms. It was cut to sit lightly against the slope, following the contour rather than blasting through it, so the redwoods stay right at the edge of the carriageway.
It is also the road you will take the other way — out to the trailhead in the morning, back again when the light goes gold. For guests at the Rider Lodge, this is effectively the neutral zone between the front door and the forest.
The cut batters have been hydroseeded to hold them while native planting establishes. Within a couple of seasons the earthworks disappear and it reads as a track that was always there.
This is one piece of the stay you'll have.
